Robert L. Edwards, Conductor, Consultant, Photographer

The miracle of this photograph is not just the successful capturing of an expression. The “room,” the lighting, the camera placement and focus were all carefully preset before the subject was put in place. The camera used a large format glass negative with a slow emulsion, and in order to use a high shutter speed to prevent blurring from a subject likely to move, lots of light was required. But notice how controlled the lighting is so it appears to fall gently in the room creating levels, depth and balanced detail.

Even ignoring the subject’s expression of curiosity or wonder or distraction, this is a beautiful photograph!
